Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant Honored by the City of New Haven

Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant and the Tessema family have been honored by the City of New Haven for 25 years of dedication to the community and for enriching the city’s vibrant culinary scene. Since opening its doors in 1999, Lalibela has been a cornerstone of downtown New Haven, offering authentic Ethiopian cuisine and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

On December 19, 2024, Mayor Justin Elicker issued an official proclamation recognizing Lalibela’s contributions to the local economy, culture, and food scene. This honor highlights not only the restaurant’s success but also the importance of small businesses in shaping the city’s identity.

25 Years of Tradition and Growth

Founded by husband-and-wife team Wubneh (“Wub”) and Shilmat Tessema, alongside Yonas Asfaw, Lalibela was built on a dream of sharing Ethiopian flavors and traditions with the people of New Haven. Over the years, it has become more than just a restaurant—it has been a gathering place for food lovers, a symbol of cultural exchange, and a pioneer in New Haven’s now-thriving food scene.

Lalibela’s success is rooted in its commitment to quality and tradition. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant serves dishes that are prepared without preservatives or added sugar, featuring a variety of vegetarian, vegan, and meat options. This dedication to authentic and wholesome cooking has earned Lalibela a loyal customer base and a reputation as the best Ethiopian restaurant in Connecticut.
